No needle option on McGregor Blvd, Fort Myers
A Cortisone Shot Alternative in Fort Myers
The first shot helped. The second helped a little less. Now the pain is back in a few weeks, and you are asking if there is another way. If you want a cortisone shot alternative in Fort Myers, SoftWave is one option worth asking your doctor about.
Our view: if you have had more than one shot for the same spot and the relief keeps getting shorter, it is fair to look at something that works on the tissue, not just the swelling. Start with a $49 mapping session.

What does a cortisone shot actually do?
Cortisone is a steroid. It is a strong medicine that calms swelling. A doctor puts it right into the sore spot with a needle.
For many people it works well for a while. That is why doctors use it. It can be the right call, and we are not here to talk you out of care your doctor recommends.
But a shot quiets the pain. It does not rebuild a worn tendon. When the medicine wears off, the problem under it may still be there.
How is SoftWave different from a cortisone shot?
Cortisone shot
- Needle into the joint or tendon
- Steroid medicine
- Aims to calm swelling
- Usually one quick visit
SoftWave
- Wand on the skin, no needle
- No medicine
- Sends sound waves that signal the body to repair
- A plan of short visits, about 10 to 15 minutes each
SoftWave devices have FDA 510(k) clearance for certain uses, such as activating connective tissue (the tough bands that hold joints together) and improving blood supply. Tendons and ligaments get little blood, so they heal slowly. More blood flow may help.
We will not promise a result. Patients often report less pain after a full plan. Some do not. The mapping is how we find out if you are likely to be in the first group.
Who asks us about SoftWave instead of a shot?
Picture a woman in her 60s from the McGregor corridor. She plays pickleball three mornings a week. Her elbow has had two shots this year. The last one lasted about a month. She is not against shots. She just wants to try something else before the third one.
Or a man from San Carlos Park with heel pain every morning. He hates needles. His foot doctor mentioned a shot. He wants to know his choices first.
Conditions our clinic treats with SoftWave include knee, shoulder, back and elbow pain, arthritis, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis and ligament damage. See knee pain treatment in Fort Myers or tennis elbow treatment for more.

What about gel shots and PRP?
Cortisone is not the only shot people get offered. Two others come up a lot:
- Gel shots (hyaluronic acid) add a slippery fluid to the knee joint. Results vary, and they are mostly used for knee arthritis.
- PRP (platelet-rich plasma) uses part of your own blood, spun down and shot back into the sore spot. It is often paid for out of pocket.
For knee and hip arthritis, the American College of Rheumatology's 2019 guideline strongly recommends against PRP. Its main worry is that PRP is made too many different ways from clinic to clinic to know what you are getting. You can read the guideline summary. For tendon problems, ask your doctor what the research shows for your exact spot.
Our view: if you want something that needs no needle and no medicine, try SoftWave before any of these. If you are weighing a knee replacement, read that page too.
Should I skip the shot my doctor recommended?
No. Do not cancel care on your own because of a web page. That includes this one.
Here is what we suggest. Come to the mapping. Learn what we find and what a plan would look like. Then take that to your doctor and decide together. Some people do SoftWave first. Some get the shot. Some do both at different times. Your doctor knows your history. We do not, until we meet you.
A sudden injury, a hot and red joint, fever, or a limb that will not hold weight needs a medical doctor right away, not SoftWave.
What happens at a SoftWave visit?
- Mapping. We slide the wand over the sore area to find spots that react. This shows us where to treat.
- Treatment. Gel goes on the skin. The wand taps over the sore spots. Most people feel a light thump.
- Back to your day. No needle site to watch. You can drive home.
Matthew Mahoney runs your sessions. Dr. Lee Angle, D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic), oversees care at Upper Cervical Health Centers. He tried SoftWave on his own shoulder before he offered it to patients.

Common questions
Is SoftWave a replacement for a cortisone shot?
It is a different option, not a direct swap. Talk with your doctor about whether SoftWave makes sense for you. Our $49 mapping can help you bring real answers to that talk.
Can I get SoftWave if I already had cortisone shots?
Yes. We ask you to wait 3 weeks after a cortisone shot before starting SoftWave. Tell us the date of your last shot when you book.
Does SoftWave use needles or drugs?
No. SoftWave uses sound waves sent through the skin with a wand. There is no needle and no medicine.
How many SoftWave sessions will I need?
Our usual plan is 6 to 8 sessions over about 6 to 8 weeks. We give you our estimate after the mapping.
Can I use my HSA?
Yes. You can pay with your HSA card. Check with your HSA provider about your own account.
