Knee Pain Treatment in Fort Myers with SoftWave
You grab the rail on the stairs. You push off the arm of the chair to stand. You skip the last nine holes. If your knee is running your life, this page is about knee pain treatment in Fort Myers that does not start with a needle or a scalpel.
Here is where we stand: unless an X-ray shows your knee is worn down to bone, most people with months of knee pain should try SoftWave before a surgery consult. Facing a new knee? Read knee replacement alternatives. Start with a $49 mapping session.

What causes knee pain that won't go away?
Knees take a beating. They carry your weight on every step. Common causes of long-term knee pain include:
- Arthritis, where the smooth lining of the joint wears thin
- Tendonitis, a sore tendon (the cord that ties muscle to bone), often just below the kneecap
- Ligament strain from a twist or fall
- Old sports injuries that never fully settled down
In Lee County we see it a lot in golfers, pickleball players at the courts around town, and retirees who walk every morning in their neighborhood.
How does SoftWave help knee pain?
SoftWave sends gentle sound waves into the tissue around your knee. Your body reads those waves as a signal to repair.
SoftWave devices have FDA 510(k) clearance for some uses, such as improving blood supply and activating connective tissue (the tough bands that hold joints together). Knee pain, arthritis, tendonitis and ligament damage are all on the list of problems our clinic treats with it.
Tendons and ligaments get little blood flow, so they heal slowly. SoftWave may help by bringing more blood to them. Patients often report that stairs and standing up feel easier after a full plan. We will not promise a result.
For knee arthritis, there is real research. A 2020 review of 9 studies (705 patients) in International Orthopaedics found less knee joint pain after shockwave therapy than with the comparison treatments, at two weeks and at six months. The studies were small and varied, so we treat it as a good sign rather than a promise. You can read a summary of the review.
What it will not do: grow back cartilage that is gone. If your knee is bone on bone, we will say so.
Who is a good fit for SoftWave knee treatment?
You may be a good fit if your knee has hurt for months, you have tried rest, ice, braces or physical therapy, and you want to avoid pills or a shot every few months.
Picture a man in his late 60s who lives in Whiskey Creek. He plays golf twice a week at a course near the river. Now his knee aches by the back nine and he walks downstairs one step at a time. He does not want a knee replacement yet. That is the person we built this for.
A fresh injury with a lot of swelling, a locked knee, or a knee that gives way needs an exam by a medical doctor first. The mapping session helps us spot those cases.

What does a SoftWave knee session feel like?
- Mapping. We move the wand around your knee to find the spots that react. This shows us where to treat.
- Treatment. Gel goes on your skin. The wand taps over the sore areas. Most people feel a light thump. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Back to your day. You can drive home or go to work.
Wear shorts. It makes the visit faster. Your sessions are run by Matthew Mahoney, and Dr. Lee Angle, D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic), oversees care at Upper Cervical Health Centers.
