Heel pain help on McGregor Blvd, Fort Myers

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment in Fort Myers with SoftWave

You swing your feet out of bed. You stand up. And then that sharp stab hits your heel. If that sounds like your mornings, you are looking for plantar fasciitis treatment in Fort Myers, and you are in the right place.

Our view: if your heel has hurt for more than a few months and stretching alone has not fixed it, try SoftWave before you get talked into a shot or surgery. Start with a $49 mapping session.

What is plantar fasciitis?

Under your foot is a thick band of tissue. It runs from your heel to your toes, like a bowstring. Doctors call it the plantar fascia.

When that band gets strained over and over, it gets sore where it hooks onto the heel bone. That soreness is plantar fasciitis.

The signs are easy to spot:

  • Sharp heel pain on your first steps in the morning
  • Pain after sitting a while, then standing up
  • An ache that eases as you walk, then comes back by evening
  • A tender spot on the bottom of the heel when you press it

Lots of Fort Myers folks get it. Think of barefoot walks on the hard sand at Fort Myers Beach, flip flops all summer, or long shifts on tile floors at work.

How does SoftWave help heel pain?

SoftWave is a machine that sends sound waves into tissue. Your body reads those waves as a signal to repair.

SoftWave devices have FDA 510(k) clearance for some uses, such as improving blood supply and activating connective tissue (the tough bands that hold your body together). Plantar fasciitis is one of the problems our clinic treats with it.

The plantar fascia does not get much blood flow. That is one reason it heals so slowly. SoftWave may help by bringing more blood to the area. Patients often report that first steps out of bed feel easier after a full plan. We will not promise that. Every foot is different.

Who is a good fit for SoftWave plantar fasciitis treatment?

You may be a good fit if:

  • Your heel has hurt for months, not days
  • You have tried stretching, ice, new shoes or inserts, and it keeps coming back
  • You want to stay off pain pills
  • You want to keep walking, golfing or working on your feet

Picture a nurse at a hospital off Colonial Blvd. She works 12 hour shifts. By hour eight, her heel is screaming. She does not have weeks to rest it. That is the kind of person who often calls us.

Some heel pain is not plantar fasciitis. It can be a stress fracture or a pinched nerve. If the mapping shows something SoftWave can't help, we will tell you and point you to the right kind of doctor.

What does a SoftWave visit for heel pain feel like?

  1. Mapping. We glide the wand over your heel and arch to find the spots that react. This tells us where to treat.
  2. Treatment. Gel goes on your foot. The wand taps over the sore band. You will feel a light thump. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Walk out. Put your shoes on and go. No needles, no boot, no crutches.

Your sessions are run by Matthew Mahoney, our SoftWave technician. Dr. Lee Angle, D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic), oversees care at Upper Cervical Health Centers.

How many SoftWave sessions does plantar fasciitis need?

Our usual plan is 6 to 8 sessions over about 6 to 8 weeks. Some feet need fewer. Some need more. A heel that has hurt for two years may take longer than one that started this spring.

Most people need 6 to 8 sessions, once a week. If the problem is very acute, visits may be closer together. Your mapping is where we set the plan for your case.

Keep doing your calf and foot stretches the whole time. They help. Not sure which ones? See our plantar fasciitis stretches.

How much does plantar fasciitis treatment cost in Fort Myers?

The first step is the mapping session. It costs $49. We find your pain points, explain what we see and tell you if SoftWave makes sense for your heel.

Full plan price: $100 per session, or 6 sessions for $540 (that is $90 a session).

Paying: You can pay with your HSA card. Read more on paying with an HSA.

What does the research say about shockwave for heel pain?

One study used the same kind of machine SoftWave uses. Fansa and colleagues looked back at 108 people with plantar fasciitis who had 3 weekly sessions (Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, 2021). On average, pain went from about 7 out of 10 to under 3 out of 10. Most of them, 81.5%, said they were happy with the treatment. The study had no comparison group.

A panel from the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons agreed that shockwave is safe and effective for plantar fasciitis (2018). In the studies they reviewed, about 7 in 10 people with heel pain that had lasted a while felt much better at 12 weeks. They looked at other shockwave machines, and they said it is not a first choice for brand-new heel pain.

Study results are averages from groups of people. They are not a promise of what will happen for you. Your mapping session shows whether SoftWave fits your case.

Common questions

Does SoftWave on the heel hurt?

Most people feel tapping or pressure. The heel can be tender, so your technician can turn the strength down.

Can I walk normally after a session?

Most people walk out and go back to their day. No special limits are needed after a session. Nothing special. You can drive home or go back to work right after.

Do I still need to stretch and wear good shoes?

Yes. SoftWave is something to add to stretching and good shoes, not a swap for them.

How many sessions does plantar fasciitis take?

Our usual plan is 6 to 8 sessions over about 6 to 8 weeks. We will give you our view after your mapping.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed to book the $49 mapping session.
