Sprained Ligament Treatment in Fort Myers for Sprains That Won't Heal

You rolled your ankle stepping off a curb downtown in March. It is now June, and it still swells after a walk. Or you caught yourself on your hand during a fall at the beach, and your wrist still aches when you push up from a chair.

If you need sprained ligament treatment in Fort Myers, here is what we think: a sprain that still hurts after two months is not "just a sprain" anymore. Get it looked at, and do not just tape it for another season.

What is a sprained ligament?

A ligament is a short, strong band that holds two bones together at a joint. A sprain means you stretched it too far or tore part of it.

Doctors grade sprains by how bad they are:

  • Mild: stretched, a little sore
  • Moderate: partly torn, swollen, bruised, hard to use
  • Severe: fully torn, the joint feels loose or gives way

Ligaments have a poor blood supply. That is one reason some sprains heal slowly or not all the way.

Which sprains do we see most in Fort Myers?

Ankle sprains top the list. Uneven sidewalks, sand at Fort Myers Beach, a quick side step on the pickleball court. Once an ankle has been sprained, it can stay weak and roll again.

Wrist sprains come next. Most happen when you fall and put a hand out. Bikers on the trails and golfers who hit a root mid-swing see these too.

Knees can sprain as well. Read about knee pain treatment in Fort Myers.

When do I need a surgeon or the ER instead?

Go to urgent care or the ER first if you cannot put any weight on the foot, the joint looks bent, or you think a bone is broken.

See a surgeon (an orthopedic doctor) if your ankle or wrist feels loose, keeps giving way, or a scan shows a full tear. A fully torn ligament needs a surgeon's opinion. SoftWave cannot reattach it.

We will tell you plainly if we think you belong in a surgeon's office instead of ours.

How might SoftWave help a slow-healing sprain?

Ligament damage is on the list of conditions our clinic treats. SoftWave sends gentle sound waves into the tissue. SoftWave devices have FDA 510(k) clearance for certain uses, such as improving blood supply and activating connective tissue.

The goal is to bring more blood flow to a ligament that has stalled. Patients often report less ache and swelling after a full plan. Results vary, and we will not promise yours.

Balance and strength work still matter, mostly for ankles. A weak ankle rolls again.

What does a visit feel like?

  1. Mapping. Matthew Mahoney moves the wand around the ankle or wrist to find the tender spots.
  2. Treatment. Gel, then light tapping for about 10 to 15 minutes. No needles.
  3. Back to your day. You walk out and drive yourself home. Aftercare: Nothing special. You can drive home or go back to work right after.

How many visits and what does it cost?

Our usual plan is 6 to 8 sessions over about 6 to 8 weeks. Most people need 6 to 8 sessions, once a week. If the problem is very acute, visits may be closer together. Your mapping is where we set the plan for your case.

Start with a $49 mapping session. We check the joint and tell you if SoftWave makes sense.

Plan price: $100 per session, or 6 sessions for $540 (that is $90 a session).

Paying: You can pay with your HSA card. Read more on paying with an HSA.

What can I do at home for an old sprain?

Old sprains often hang on because the joint got weak, not because it needs more rest. For an ankle, try standing on the sore foot while you brush your teeth. Hold the counter if you need to. Work up to 30 seconds.

Wear supportive shoes on uneven ground. Flip flops on the sand and old sidewalks make a weak ankle roll again.

For a wrist, squeeze a soft ball a few times a day, gently. Stop if it sends sharp pain.

If the joint still swells or aches after a few weeks of this, it is time for a closer look. The $49 mapping is a low-cost way to find out where you stand.

Common questions

How long should a sprain take to heal?

Mild sprains often feel better in a few weeks. If yours still hurts, swells or feels loose after six weeks or more, get it checked.

Can SoftWave fix a torn ligament?

No. A full tear needs a surgeon's opinion. SoftWave may help a partly torn or slow-healing ligament. It cannot sew a torn one back together.

Do I need an X-ray first?

If you might have a broken bone, yes. Go to urgent care first. If you already had imaging, bring the report to your mapping.

Does SoftWave on an ankle hurt?

Most people feel light tapping. The sorest spot can feel sharp for a moment, and Matthew Mahoney can turn it down.

How many sessions does a sprain take?

Our usual plan is 6 to 8 sessions over about 6 to 8 weeks. Most people need 6 to 8 sessions, once a week. If the problem is very acute, visits may be closer together. Your mapping is where we set the plan for your case.
